How to Use AI for Writing Without Sounding Like a Robot

← Back to blog

AI can draft an email, a blog post or a caption in seconds — but copy-pasting the first output usually reads exactly like what it is: AI-generated. The good news is that avoiding the "robot voice" doesn't take much extra effort, just a different way of using the tool.

Give It Your Voice, Not Just Your Topic

Instead of "Write a blog post about productivity", try: "Write like I talk — direct, a bit informal, short sentences. Here's a sample of my writing: [paste example]. Now write about productivity in that voice." AI is far better at imitating a style you show it than guessing one you haven't described.

Cut the Telltale AI Phrases

Certain words and structures are dead giveaways: "In today's fast-paced world", "It's important to note that", "Moreover" used three times in one page, and suspiciously perfect three-item lists everywhere. Ask the AI directly: "Rewrite this without generic AI phrases like 'in today's world' or 'it's worth noting'."

Use AI for the Skeleton, Not the Skin

The best results come from using AI to build structure — an outline, a rough first draft, a list of points — then rewriting the actual sentences yourself. This keeps your natural rhythm and word choice while still saving the time of starting from a blank page.

Always Do a Human Pass

Before publishing anything AI-assisted, read it out loud. If a sentence doesn't sound like something you'd actually say, rewrite it. This single step catches almost all of the "robotic" tells that make readers lose trust in a piece of writing.

The Real Goal

AI should make your writing faster, not make it sound like everyone else's. The moment your writing becomes indistinguishable from every other AI-assisted post online, you've lost the one thing that makes people want to read what you write in the first place: you.
